What you are actually paying for in a diagnostic charge

Refrigerator not cooling but the freezer is fine

Nobody enjoys paying a diagnostic charge. It feels like being billed for an opinion. It is worth understanding what that half hour actually consists of, because the alternative is a business model that costs you considerably more.

What happens in that half hour

The machine gets run, under load, while somebody watches what it does rather than listening to a description of it. Voltages get measured at points that mean something. Whatever the control board has stored gets read out, which on a modern appliance is a list of everything that has gone wrong since it was installed. Parts get tested individually rather than by swapping.

At the end of it there is an answer, not a theory. That is the difference you are paying for.

The alternative, and what it costs you

A company that does not charge for diagnostics have to recover that time somewhere, and there are only two places. Either the parts are marked up steeply enough to cover the visits that go nowhere, or the technician is under pressure to find something billable on every call. Neither of those is in your interest and both are invisible on the invoice.

Why it should come off the repair

If you agree to the work, the charge should fold into the labor, because the diagnostics have become part of the job. If you decline, you have still bought something real: an accurate answer about what is wrong with your machine, which you can take to somebody else or use to decide about replacing it.

When you should decline

When you already know the machine is finished. If a fifteen-year-old washer needs a tub and bearing assembly, you do not need anybody to confirm it. Say what the machine is doing on the phone and a decent company will tell you whether the visit is worth booking at all.

What we do

Flat diagnostic charge, told to you before you book. It comes off the labor if you go ahead. If we work out on the phone that the answer is going to be “replace it”, we say so and there is nothing to pay.
